Background of the Study
Gender stereotypes significantly influence the career choices of youths in Ilesa West Local Government Area, Osun State. Deep-rooted societal beliefs about gender roles often steer young individuals toward careers deemed appropriate for their gender, limiting their potential and reinforcing occupational segregation (Adebayo, 2023). These stereotypes are perpetuated through family expectations, media portrayals, and educational practices, ultimately shaping the self-perception and ambition of young people. Recent research suggests that early exposure to gendered expectations can lead to the internalization of restrictive career norms, thereby affecting long-term professional development (Olu, 2024). The study explores how these stereotypes manifest in career counseling, school curricula, and societal interactions, and examines their impact on youth employment prospects. By employing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, this research seeks to unveil the extent to which gender stereotypes deter youths from pursuing diverse career paths. The findings are expected to inform educational reforms and career guidance strategies that promote a more inclusive approach to professional development (Balogun, 2025). This investigation contributes to the broader dialogue on gender equality and youth empowerment.

Statement of the Problem
Despite progressive educational reforms, gender stereotypes continue to shape the career choices of youths in Ilesa West, limiting their potential. These stereotypes contribute to occupational segregation and restrict the diversity of career paths pursued by young people. The influence of cultural and social expectations in educational and familial contexts remains understudied, hindering the development of inclusive career guidance policies. This gap in understanding prevents the formulation of strategies to encourage non-traditional career choices among youths. Therefore, a focused investigation is required to explore how gender stereotypes affect career decision-making processes and to recommend effective interventions (Ifeoma, 2023). Further inquiry is absolutely required for clarity.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence of gender stereotypes influencing youth career choices.

  • To examine the mechanisms by which these stereotypes affect career decision-making.

  • To propose interventions that promote diverse career options among youths.

Research Questions:

  • What role do gender stereotypes play in shaping career choices in Ilesa West?

  • How do family, educational institutions, and media reinforce these stereotypes?

  • What strategies can be implemented to mitigate the influence of gender stereotypes on career decisions?

Research Hypotheses:

  • Youth exposed to strong gender stereotypes are more likely to choose traditional career paths.

  • Family and educational influences significantly reinforce stereotypical career choices.

  • Interventions aimed at challenging gender norms will diversify youth career preferences.

Significance of the Study
This study provides essential insights into how gender stereotypes shape youth career choices, offering valuable guidance for educators and policymakers. Its findings will support the development of inclusive career counseling and educational reforms that encourage diverse professional aspirations. The research promotes youth empowerment and contributes to reducing occupational segregation in Ilesa West (Chinwe, 2024). Moreover, it lays a foundation for further studies on gender and career development.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to examining the impact of gender stereotypes on youth career choices within Ilesa West Local Government Area. It focuses on the influence of family, educational, and media factors on career decision-making. The findings are specific to this locality and may not be applicable to different regions. The study does not address long-term career trajectories beyond initial career choices.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Gender Stereotypes: Preconceived notions about appropriate roles and behaviors based on gender.

  • Career Choices: The decisions individuals make regarding their professional paths.

  • Occupational Segregation: The distribution of people across and within jobs based on demographic characteristics, including gender.
